ProSweep has been a very successful product for professional use by clinicians who practice EMDR and related bilateral stimulation therapies. Used in the same manner as an EMDR kinesthetic stimulator that provides alternating stimulation from two sensors, EMDR sweeps sound between each ear. The sound that is the stimulus is a multiple density harmonic that has an arousing effect on the frontal regions of the brain. This blended harmonic also increases occipital slow frequency amplitude in many patients/clients resulting in a simultaneous quieting during EMDR treatments. ProSweep has three excursion frequencies that are used in exactly the same manner that therapists use various eye movement frequencies in EMDR. By controlling the sound volume, the therapist can fade ProSweep in and out as the therapy requires. The speed of the excursion can likewise be controlled by moving among the three harmonic tracts on the CD.

The companion product, Sweep, contains the medium excursion frequency found on ProSweep and can be prescribed by the therapist for patient/client self-administration. This is a very powerful therapeutic combination for clients/patients to sustain gains made in therapy as well as to further desensitize to traumatic thought content in the home environment under the therapist’s supervision. The instructions for home use are contained in the Sweep CD enclosure. In general, therapists start with tract two on ProSweep, the medium sweep frequency, and then change to the faster or the slower excursion frequency tracts as dictated by therapeutic progress. It is important to keep the volume level low at the outset of therapy and then increase the volume if desired by the client/patient. The harmonics are most effective at low amplitude. At higher amplitudes, patients/clients occasionally report feeling nauseous because of the sweeping sound. Reducing the volume usually eliminates the problem and the feeling usually dissipates in any event without volume reduction after a few minutes exposure. However, lower frequencies are, in general, most therapeutically effective and clients/patients rarely complain of discomfort at the lower sound amplitude.

ProSweep and Sweep have had significant Alpha and Beta testing and the response has been extremely favorable: Dr. Claire Hawes wrote, “…my client made more progress after one use of (Sweep) than in weeks (of regular EMDR therapy).” Dr. Lee Pulos wrote: “…my patients prefer Sweep 3 to 1 over the EMDR stimulator.”
